The Conservatives have selected their Prospective Parliamentary Candidates for Coventry for the next General Election.
At a meeting of Party Members, former local City Councillor Gary Ridley was selected to fight the Coventry South constituency. Parvez Akhtar, who works for Jaguar Land Rover at Whitley, was selected to contest Coventry North West and Michelle Lowe, a marketing communications specialist, was chosen to fight Coventry North East.
Speaking after the meeting, the candidate for Coventry South, Gary Ridley said: “I am delighted that I have been selected to contest Coventry South for the Conservatives. I will be making the case for a Conservative government that is fixing our economy, keeping interest rates low, creating jobs and growth while still reducing the deficit. All of this could be put at risk if Ed Miliband was Prime Minister because it could mean higher taxes, higher debt, and higher immigration, which would result in more hardship for local people and greater pressure on already stretched public services.”
Parvez Akhtar, an engineer by profession, said: “In a city with a long and proud engineering heritage, I am very pleased to have been chosen for Coventry North West. I will put party politics aside and work with everyone here in Coventry to continue the revival of our car industry, fight the development of our green belt as well as promote what the Government is achieving for our young people. We have nearly 2 million more apprenticeships, lowest unemployment of 16-24 year olds since records began, and a record number of free schools and academies opening up in the City.”
Michelle Lowe, who will be fighting Coventry North East, said: “People in Coventry have been badly let down over the years and we have to put that right. Taking thousands of the lowest paid people out of tax altogether so that they can keep more of their hard earned money is a good start but we have to do more. We have to continue to make the case for more money for our health services including our local University Hospital and we can only do that with a growing economy. All of this is at risk should Ed Miliband win the next General Election, because he does not have any credible ideas on how to deal with the problems the country is facing."
