Coventry Conservatives have pressed the Council for urgent assurances following the collapse of City Culture Coventry, after the Charity Commission issued findings criticising the organisation’s financial oversight.
During Question Time at Full Council on 8 September, Cllr John Blundell raised the issue directly with the Cabinet Member for Finance. Referring to the Commission’s recent conclusions, he asked what steps the Council is taking to address reputational damage and how it will ensure that Coventry City Council’s own financial governance remains robust.
The BBC’s reporting highlighted significant concerns around the management and accountability of City Culture, which entered liquidation with substantial debts and unresolved governance issues.
Cllr Blundell stressed that the public must have confidence that lessons will be learned and that stronger safeguards will be put in place to prevent similar failures in future.
The Conservative Group has called for clearer oversight, improved monitoring of funded organisations, and greater transparency in how public money is managed.
With Coventry’s cultural sector facing renewed scrutiny, councillors emphasised that restoring trust must now be a priority.
