Residents in Mount Nod, Coventry are calling for safety measures on Alderminster Road after a car ploughed into a house in July. A petition bearing 466 signatures will be presented to Councillors on Tuesday 10th October by Woodlands ward Councillor Julia Lepoidevin. She wants the Council to explore a range of options to make the road safer and protect residents from any further incidents.
In July a speeding BMW hurtled through a crash barrier and a garden wall before smashing into a house. According to shocked residents police used sniffer dogs to apprehend the driver, who had fled the scene. Although there were no serious injuries, the house was left uninhabitable while insurers assessed the damage.
Speaking ahead of the meeting Cllr Julia Lepoidevin said; “We’ve collected a very large petition which shows just how concerned residents are. Although the incident in July was an extreme example, residents have been complaining about the speed of many drivers for some time. That incident only highlighted the need for action to be taken. We hope that this petition will demonstrate the strength of feeling in this community and we call on the Council to take action now.”
Fellow Woodlands ward Councillor, Cllr Peter Male, said “No one wants a pedestrian or resident to be caught up in a road traffic accident but frankly it’s a miracle that nobody was hurt in July. We’ve got to think about the future and the truth is the current layout of the highway makes it easier for drivers to speed. We’d ask the Council to consider this petition carefully and think again about how we can make the road safer for everyone.”
Woodlands ward Councillor and Leader of Coventry Conservatives, Cllr Gary Ridley, said; “The Council must take this petition seriously. We’re asking them to explore potential road safety options so that we can a find a way forward that’s suitable for everyone. I just hope they think of the children, young families and vulnerable elderly residents who use this street as a thoroughfare every day. Don’t we have a duty to think of their safety?”
