Conservative Candidate for West Midlands Police and Crime Commissioner, Matt Bennett, has joined Cheylesmore Ward Councillors Hazel Noonan & Kevin Foster in expressing disappointment at today’s (Thursday 20th September 2012) decision by the City Council to support a proposal for a new off licence in Cheylesmore to open from 6am till 10pm, 7 days a week.
At today’s hearing Hazel and Kevin attended to put forward the concerns of local residents that allowing alcohol sales so early in the morning could attract problem drinkers to our area when other premises close for the night, as well as creating disturbance for those living nearby. Those premises that are currently licensed to sell alcohol in the area around Quinton Pools in Cheylesmore are unable to do so before 8am.
The representations made at today’s hearing focussed on the issue of allowing sales at 6am, rather than 8am, in particular on Sunday mornings. The City Council’s decision opens the door for other premises to apply for a breakfast time opening for alcohol sales, including any new supermarket in the area. Despite concerns about potential anti-social behaviour the Police did not object to the licence.
Commenting on the decision Matt Bennett said: "It is disappointing that the City Council failed to stand up for residents' interests and allowed this to go through. It is also disappointing that the Police did not object. Too many areas have seen the number of off licenses grow and their opening hours expand, with increases in antisocial behaviour following on. I don't want to see that happen in Cheylesmore. I want to see the Police take a tougher line with these applications and will make it a priority if elected."
Cllr Hazel Noonan said: “I am disappointed that the City Council did not listen to the points put forward by local residents on this application. This decision now paves the way for a number of premises in our area to open at 6am. Is Cheylesmore really going to be a better and safer community with bargain booze available for breakfast? I do not believe so and am pleased to note Matt’s pledge to take a firmer line on such issues if elected.”
