City Councillors and local residents have been given a sneak preview of the new reservoir being constructed on Scots Lane in Coventry. They were shown around the development site on Saturday 26th November by construction engineers Costain Ltd.
The site was first home to two reservoirs in the nineteenth century and another was added in the 1930’s which are being replaced with a new single reservoir capable of holding 5million litres of water. The redevelopment represents an investment of £3.5 million into the site by owners Severn Trent and will ensure the security of Coventry’s water supply well into the future.
Work on the site is expected to reach completion by July 2012 and will significantly alter the appearance of the site on Scots Lane with the new reservoir occupying a much smaller footprint. City Councillors and residents have praised contractors, Costain Ltd, for being good neighbours and engaging with residents during the process. The visit was arranged by Costain to keep residents informed of developments on site.
Bablake Ward Councillor Andrew Williams said: “I would like to thank Severn Trent and Costain Ltd for showing myself and residents around the site today and I am particularly pleased with the way they have communicated with local residents. I think other companies should take this as an example of how to work with communities during times when their work may be disruptive."
Sherbourne ward Councillor Gary Ridley who was also on the trip said: “This is a big project and represents a massive investment by Severn Trent which will secure Coventry’s water supply for future generations which we should all be pleased about. With that comes a risk of potential disruption which both Costain Ltd and Severn Trent have gone out of their way to minimise. Although there have been some difficulties they have worked hard to engage with the local community and this project is an excellent example of how such things should be run.”
