Praise for Police Action That Saw 9 Men Arrested As Violence Flared
Cllr Kevin Foster, Leader of Coventry Conservatives, has condemned the actions of those involved in an outbreak of violent disorder in his Cheylesmore Ward.
Police officers attended the Daventry Road area at 10.30pm last night following reports a parked car was ablaze and a petrol bomb had been thrown at a passing vehicle. More than 20 police, including public order specialists, confronted a small crowd and gave chase as they tried fleeing the scene. In total 9 men were arrested. Most are in their late teens or early 20s, but 1 man in his mid-40s is also among those now in custody.
In a statement Cllr Kevin Foster said: “The violence seen in Cheylesmore last night cannot be justified and I totally condemn it. I know that residents of all ages will be angry to see the name of our area dragged through the mud by a small number of individuals who were intent on engaging in criminal violence.”
“I would like to praise the bravery of the Police Officers who attended this incident and ensured local people were protected from these thugs. I am pleased to hear that 9 arrests have been made and those responsible should face the full force of the law. I know residents across Cheylesmore will give their total backing to the Police in dealing with any further violence and I have already made clear they can count on my full support.”
