Student village’ on the former Canley sports and social club Marler road application was withdrawn to avoid refusal due to concerns with the proposals (parking layout, massing of the buildings, potential overlooking of existing properties).
Westwood ward Conservative Councillors David Skinner, Marcus Lapsa and Tim Mayer have been fighting to block proposals for a ‘student village’ on the former Canley sports and social club Marler road. Since the change of use from family housing to a student village was realised in March 2017. The land had outline planning permission for up to 44 dwellings on the site given in 2015.
“The site in Marler Road, Canley, of the former Social Club has stood vacant for some time, and a proposal has been made for possible student accommodation there.
Councillors Marcus Lapsa, Tim Mayer and David Skinner all fully recognize the great importance of Warwick University for Coventry and know that students need good accommodation.
But we hope that the Marler Road site can be used for the good quality affordable housing much needed in Canley and beyond. Our hard-working constituents deserve a range of housing incorporating the latest technological advances.
This is one of the reasons Westwood ward Conservative Councillors are opposing an application to build on the land. Since March they have seen their Online petition on the council website reach 114 signatures and a on Change .org another petition has reached over 200 signatures calling for affordable and family housing to be built on the land instead giving over 300 signatures altogether.. In a joint statement Cllr’s Skinner, Mayer and Lapsa said " We are calling on Coventry Council to reject plans for a potential 300-bed gated student accommodation block. We are concerned about additional transport and parking problems, plus safety issues for students walking to and from the site.
Following an email from Planning officers Westwood councillors were pleased to hear the application had been withdrawn due to a number of concerns with the proposals (parking layout, massing of the buildings, potential overlooking of existing properties). Cllr Skinner commented that the delay is welcomed although we must remain focused on stopping this development as a revised application is expected over the next few weeks.
