Cheylesmore Ward Councillor Hazel Noonan has welcomed the decision made this week by council officers to refuse planning permission for a proposed takeaway at 131 Daventry Road.
The decision under delegated powers follows objections being lodged by Cllr Hazel Noonan and local residents who also gathered a 61 signature petition against this plan. If approved the plan would have seen a takeaway opening from 8am to 11pm Monday to Saturday and 8am to 10pm on Sundays and Bank Holidays.
The application was made by the same company that recently had plans for a late night takeaway at 111 Quinton Road, Cheylesmore rejected by the Planning Committee. Councillor Noonan is now calling on them to work with local traders to develop a vibrant shopping experience, rather than carry on trying to convert local shops into late night takeaways.
Cllr Hazel Noonan said: “This latest decision is another victory for residents who are campaigning to protect their local area. There is no shortage of takeaway facilities in the Cheylesmore area and preserving a range of retail uses is vital to ensuring a viable future for the Daventry Road Parade. Residents living nearby were rightly concerned about the impact this plan would have on their homes and I will continue to support them.”
She added: “Rather than waste time appealing this decision I would encourage the company behind these two applications to work with traders and residents to develop the parade as a vibrant local retail experience. This is what will produce long term success, rather than trying to turn Cheylesmore into a centre for late night takeaways.”
