After more than six years of campaigning, residents in Cheylesmore are set to benefit from a new pedestrian crossing on Leamington Road, with construction due to begin shortly and completion expected before Christmas.
The Cheylesmore Team, including Cllr Roger Bailey, Cllr Barbara Mosterman and community campaigner Shiva Pala, have received confirmation that work on the new zebra crossing will begin shortly.
The improvement follows a campaign first launched in August 2020, when residents raised concerns about the safety of crossing Leamington Road to access War Memorial Park. A petition was subsequently presented to Coventry City Council, calling for safer pedestrian access and improved connectivity for local families.
Cllr Roger Bailey welcomed the news, saying:
"Overjoyed that after 6.5 years, following a petition, we will at long last see a new zebra crossing on the Leamington Road, in time for Christmas. This will allow safer crossing of the road into the War Memorial Park and help slow traffic down."
Cllr Barbara Mosterman also expressed her delight that the long-standing campaign was finally coming to fruition:
"After a great deal of patience, residents are finally getting the long-awaited crossing that they deserve. It should have been delivered much sooner, but I am delighted to see it now being installed."
The new crossing will provide a safer route for pedestrians accessing War Memorial Park and improve connections between Humphrey Burton Road and Leamington Road. It is also expected to help reduce vehicle speeds and improve road safety in the area.
Alongside the installation, new road markings and clearer signage will be introduced to alert approaching drivers.
Installation is expected to take approximately six weeks, with final preparations now complete and delivery of the scheme underway.
The Cheylesmore Team have welcomed the confirmation as an important step forward for the local community, highlighting how continued campaigning and listening to residents can help secure improvements that make a real difference to everyday life.
