Leading Conservative Councillors have welcomed figures that show a fall in unemployment across Coventry since 2010.
In Coventry, official figures for Coventry South show that JSA claimants fell from 3,177 in May 2010 to 2,384 in November 2013, a fall of 25 per cent, according to the Office for National Statistics. In Coventry North West, JSA claimants fell from 3,061 in May 2010 to 2,174 in November 2013, a fall of 29 per cent. In Coventry North East, claimants fell from 4,529 to 3309, a fall of 27 per cent since May 2010.
Encouragingly, the number of young JSA claimants aged 18-24 in the City also fell by 15% from 2290 in May 2010 to 1945 in November 2013.
Local Conservatives have acknowledged that there is no room for complacency and believe that apprenticeship initiatives have helped to drive down unemployment, particularly for younger people.
Commenting on the figures, Cllr Ken Taylor, the Conservative Spokesman for Business, Enterprise and Employment on Coventry City Council, said: “Despite the negativity of the Labour Party the Government's economic plan is working and this is reflected by the significant reductions in unemployment in the City."
Adding, Cllr Allan Andrews, the Deputy Leader of the Conservatives in Coventry, said: "I’m encouraged by these figures which have shown further reductions in unemployment in the City. We know there is no room for complacency as there are still too many people out of work and it is vital that we continue to help people and to ensure that the economy continues to grow. We're working closely with the City Council to do what we can to ensure that the local economy thrives."
