A campaign led by Earlsdon Ward Councillor, Ken Taylor, has been launched in an effort to save the Earlsdon library from possible closure.

As part of the Council’s budget consultation, the popular library in the heart of the Earlsdon community could be axed as the Council seeks to balance its budget. Ward Councillors Ken Taylor, Allan Andrews and Michael Hammon have launched the petition to show the Council that the local community wants to retain its local library.

Commenting on the petition, Cllr Ken Taylor, who has represented Earlsdon Ward since 1986, said: “At every budget consultation we have a situation where everything is on the table – nothing is ruled out. In response to growing concern in the community from local residents we have launched this campaign. We hope people will get behind it so that we can present a united force to the Council when decisions about services are taken.”

Adding, Cllr Allan Andrews, the Deputy Leader of the Conservative opposition, said: “We recognise the challenging funding climate being experienced by local government up and down the country at the moment, but the Earlsdon library is a much valued public asset that is used by people of all ages. We are fully committed to working hard to protecting our local services and believe that the closure of the Earlsdon library would be both shortsighted and, frankly, wrong.”

An online e-petition has been created and can be signed at: http://epetitions.coventry.gov.uk/2015/01/keep-the-earlsdon-library-open/
