Coventry Conservatives have welcomed a Council ‘u-turn’ which could see a new 50m pool developed to replace the existing pool at the Fairfax Street sports centre.
Cllr Allan Andrews, the Deputy Leader of Coventry Conservatives, who has been leading a petition calling for the retention of a 50m pool in Coventry, said: “This is good news but this should have been what the Council was doing in the first place, which is simply modelling the costs for keeping a 50m pool in the city instead of dismissing it entirely.
“It is clear that the Council is rattled and it is absolutely vital that public pressure is maintained so that we turn a vision to keep a 50m pool in Coventry into a reality, because to lose it would be a very big loss to the city.”
Cllr John Blundell, the Leader of Coventry Conservatives, said, “On my visit to Coventry Swimming club in one of their training sessions at Fairfax Street, I was impressed by the time and dedication that the 800 or so members put into their sport. The place was buzzing and it is essential we must retain this and find a way to retain this fantastic facility.”
Cllr David Skinner, who is the Conservative Spokesman for Sport and Leisure on Coventry City Council, said: ‘I’m pleased that the consultation has been extended to include the provision of a 50m pool. We now have to work hard to ensure that the finances stack up. I would encourage everybody who wishes to keep such a facility in Coventry to respond to the consultation.”
