Coventry City Council has turned down a proposed 5G mast on Sutton Avenue, Mount Nod, following objections from residents. They received the backing of Woodlands Ward Councillor Gary Ridley who collected a petition on their behalf.
Most objections were based around the proximity of the proposed mast to local houses. Many residents felt it would have been an invasive eyesore affecting their visual amenity.
There are several factors that councils need to consider when making decisions about 5G masts. These include the impact on residents, the need for the mast, and the availability of alternative sites.
Cllr Ridley has welcomed the decision, and believes it shows that councillors are taking the concerns of residents seriously. He believes it’s also a reminder that local authorities have the power to reject proposals for 5G masts if they are not in the best interests of local people.
Commenting on the decision Cllr Gary Ridley said: “This is a victory for residents who fought hard to stop the mast from being built. Residents are rightly proud of the area, and this would have detracted from their visual amenity. Although we accept the roll-out of these masts is inevitable, phone operators must not be allowed to act unilaterally. I would urge them to work closely with the Council, and the community, to ensure they are sited in appropriate locations.”
The applicants have six months to appeal the decision.
