Cheylesmore Ward Councillor Hazel Noonan has pledged her support to a campaign by local residents to prevent a shop near their homes being allowed to open late into the night as a takeaway.
The shop concerned, 111 Quinton Road, is on the very edge of the Daventry Road Shopping Parade and is currently required to close at 6pm on weekdays. This condition was imposed in 2006 to prevent nuisance to neighbouring residential properties. The owner of the building has now applied to the City Council for permission to open the shop as a takeaway from 8am to 11pm Monday to Saturday and from 8am to 10pm on Sunday.
The concerns expressed by residents are focussed on the impact that customers visiting a late night takeaway will have on their area and the lack of easily accessible parking close to the shop premises. Many residents are fearful that vehicles will either park illegally near a pedestrian crossing or use the street immediately outside their homes.
The Planning Committee is due to discuss this Application on Thursday and Hazel will be presenting a petition gathered by local residents opposing it. She said: “There are already a wide selection of food outlets in Cheylesmore. This application on a busy road near to residents’ homes will cause nuisance parking, noise and a danger to all road users. The proposed late night opening times are also unacceptable in this location. I will be asking the committee to reject this application.”
